Toric IOL: Correcting Astigmatism During Cataract Surgery

Astigmatism and cataract — fixing both at once

Corneal astigmatism means the cornea is curved unevenly, blurring vision at all distances. A standard monofocal IOL does not correct it, so glasses would still be needed for sharp distance vision. A toric IOL has a built-in cylindrical correction matched to your cornea, neutralising the astigmatism as it replaces the cloudy lens.

Why measurements matter so much

Toric success depends on two things: accurately measuring the amount and axis of corneal astigmatism (topography and biometry), and aligning the lens to that axis during surgery — a few degrees of rotation meaningfully reduces the correction. Who benefits

Patients with regular corneal astigmatism (roughly 1 dioptre or more) who want clearer unaided distance vision. Toric designs exist in monofocal, EDOF and multifocal families. Irregular astigmatism — for example from keratoconus — follows different rules and is managed individually.
